Hello Friends, "Congratulations" for this initiative.I wish the ideas
which when shared and implemented, will have a really great impact on
the saving of natural resources.
I feel, the most important thing to
realize is, until and unless each and every citizen (especially the
educated ones) realizes "the difficulty with which each unit of
electrical energy is produced to light a single bulb for an hour", there
won't be a permanent impact or a solution to this severe problem. In
our daily lives we see the tube-lights just glowing in the afternoon,
the ACs switched on when no one is there in the room/hall, computers
just turned on when no code is running(in IT companies) or even
throughout the night, the lights and fans "on" in hostel rooms
throughout the day when its inmates are busy with classes and what
not....For big organizations/institutions one bulb,or one AC or a fan in
one single room may not matter, but in the same organization if there
are hundred such rooms, the cumulative energy consumed is a lot. One
should understand this first.
One should know and beware that " ITS ONLY FOR ONE BULB THAT EACH HUT IN A VILLAGE IS CRAVING"..
I feel..competitions/contests are all good to get the ideas of thinkers/visionaries, but what is more important is
"WHAT
CAN WE DO IN OUR DAY TO DAY LIVES TO CONTRIBUTE A BIT TO SAVING THE
EXISTING RESOURCES RATHER THAN DEPLETING THE AVAILABLE ONES CARELESSLY
AND STRUGGLING AND BRAINSTORMING FOR NEWER WAYS"
As an
idea/suggestion (I have no new method of generating electrical energy
though I am an electrical engineer :) ) it will be nice if some of us
concentrate on saving the existing resources. My suggestion to the
"awesome students group" of whatever institute you belong to and whoever
is a part of this beautiful initiative, is to take a small initiative
to regulate the usage of energy and reduce the wastage of the precious
resource. You may also send a "group e-mail after a consent from your
authority" that the lights/fans/ACs etc inside hostel rooms and empty
labs/depts in colleges should be off when no one is there else strict
actions will be taken. These small acts can have a great impact and is
one of the good ways of dealing with this problem.... My request to the
student leaders who are promoting this in their colleges...just send
e-mail to the masses of your institute...finally its the students who
are a big part of the educated community and they should understand
their responsibility first!!!! Let this be a beginning of a great leap-
an individual contribution--Rest all will fall in place as
responsibility increases....as all of us know...."the ocean is the
accumulation of tiny droplets of water", similarly large amount of
electricity is a big ocean of charge with tiny droplets-electrons! Lets
save each electron from now on!

The first n foremost target should be to start with ourselves…each one
us…..who says that a single person can not change the situations around!
those are cowards who feel “wat can i do to protect environment all
alone when i know everybody else is least bothered”. First of all
chanvethis presumption into a better and a positive note -”I am the one
who can do my own bit, so the world will also think same…each one of us
doing our bit…to become greener and humane!” But unfortunately there is a
serious loophole in the system here in India..not that we r not
educated.we know Science, Commerce and Arts…it is disheartening to see a
few (or many!) rich n so-called educated section of our society in
Cities to b the ones who add a major chunk of waste, energy wastage or
becoming the dudes against environment ! there are many tribal n
traditional ways of environment protection and energy production..it is
time to amalgate those traditional ways along wkth our scientific
knowledge….pratical application of wat we always talk about…..discuss…..

One of the main target to be kept in mind by our Govt. is not just
putting in brilliant minds or technologies (which is also important) is
spend a legitimate amount on spreading awareness among the masses….India
can move ahead to a greener 2035 which self sufficient in its energy
demand fulfillment and also keeping in mi.d that wat we all want to
achieve can only b achieved if we all as a socity want to taste the
fruits! remember the Sau Paulo example! Unfotunately the toughest of the
jobs wou b to techth “educated” n “rich” anti-environment demons
because anyways its easier to train fools( no offences) rather than
teaching the educated bastards!

Next comes obviously the use of innovation and the application of renewableenergy sources .

We should use natural resources as much as possible for reducing the load on electrical energy for air conditioners, heaters, lighting etc. Optimum design of houses which have a much more open structure with thick walls is the best for providing a cool airy atmosphere. Thick walls will keep the rooms warm in winter mornings and cool in summer mornings.

HARNESSING RAIN WATER USING PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS
AND BY ROTATING TURBINES TO PRODUCE ELECTRICITY

Basic Idea:

The
basic intuition behind this vision is to utilize the concept of piezoelectric
effect and Potential energy of the stored rain water to generate power at a
commercial scale. It is world known fact that the potential energy of stored
water is a clean and renewable source to generate electricity.

The
very idea behind this concept for harvesting the source is to develop a
methodology which is green and renewable source of the energy. For this a
concept of combined effect of two things namely piezoelectric effect
and Potential energy of the stored rain water to generate power at a commercial
scale are considered. It is well established fact that the potential energy of
stored water is a clean and renewable source to generate electricity.

Structure:

The basic design comprises of a reservoir of open cross section
200 m x 200 m as an typical example (to store the rainwater).The inner lining is fitted with
piezoelectric material sheet along with a coversheet of same material angled at
0-5 degrees to horizontal. The reservoir is to be located on top of a hill or
any elevated region so as to provide the necessary potential energy required
for the power generation later on. The reservoir is connected to turbines
through pipelines. It will be provided by appropriate concrete reinforcements
so as to mitigate the possibility of a hazard. A network of such reservoirs
located on adjacent hills, for example, will be connected by pipelines or
canals so as to cumulate the power generation. They will have volume
controlling outlets which will function like sluice gate so as to prevent the
possibility of an overflow.

The basic design comprises of a open reservoir of the plan size measuring 200 m x 200 m as an
typical example (to store the rainwater). The inner lining of the reservoir is
fitted with piezoelectric material sheet alongwith a coversheet................
or any elevated place... . Therefore, the natural height so obtained will act as potential
energy source requiring for power generation at later stage.

Piezoelectricity:

It
refers to the generation of voltage by the applied mechanical force. The
application of pressure (in our case it is due to the stored water on inner
lining of reservoir and the falling raindrops on the coversheet) generates a
voltage.

Turbine:

The
stored water is allowed to fall through pipelines which are fitted with
turbines so as to convert the kinetic energy of the falling water into
electricity. A series of turbines are employed so as to increase the output.

Implementation:

The
reservoirs are exposed to open sky. During the rains the falling water drops will
cause pressure on the piezoelectric coversheet which will consequently generate
a potential difference. The resultant potential difference across a wire will
give rise to a piezoelectric current.

Assumptions while
calculating potential output of piezoelectric material on reservoir coversheet:

·
An
average raindrop falling with terminal velocity generates about 12 milli watts
of energy.

·
Average
diameter of a raindrop is equal to 3 mm.

·
Effective
area on which raindrops are falling per second is 50 per cent of the total
exposed area of the coversheet.

·
It
rains about 3 hours on an average rainy day

Calculations:

Therefore

These
are approximate calculations to find out average power generated from
piezoelectric material from coversheet.

After
falling on coversheet of reservoir, raindrops can now be made to flow into
reservoir using slope of coversheet. This will help coversheet to get exposure
to following raindrops. Thus a continual generation of power shall take place.

Stored
water in the reservoir will continually exert pressure on the inner linings of
the piezoelectric material. Thus the effective utilization of inner lining of
the piezoelectric material will generate more power.

Hydro power:

Hydro
power is power derived from energy of falling water. Substantial amount of
power generated from this structure is attributed to hydro power.

Stored
water in the reservoir will be allowed to flow through pipelines to rotate
turbines in order to generate electricity.

Novelty:

This
idea consists of structure which is simultaneously used to generate electric
power from both piezoelectricity and hydropower. Such a concept has never been
used to produce electricity at a commercial scale.

Size
of structure can be varied too, considering different sizes of hills. Joining
of small reservoirs on adjacent hills though pipelines or canals can still generate
required amount of power.

Also,
stored rain water at height on hill possess large source of potential energy and
this structure can efficiently utilise this energy towards our needs.

Dams
are the eminent sources of hydroelectricity today but this unique feature will
add up to the energy output we are currently receiving from dam. This is due to
the fact that the water from the structure is finally discharged into the
rivers where it is further harnessed for hydroelectricity at the dams

Benefits to the nation:

There is actuate shortage of power the nation is facing Today
India is suffering from acute shortage of electricity. With the fossil
fuels running out at an astonishing rate and the population increasing at an
ever alarming rate it is highly important for us to build up a system that can
sustain a clean future.

Hydroelectricity
has immense scope in India. By coupling piezoelectricity with it we strive to
expand it even further. Following points highlight the benefits that such a
system would provide to the country:

·
It
is a renewable source of energy. With India being blessed by ample rains
especially in the north eastern regions and the Western Ghats this method can
prove immensely effective. The larger the rains more will be the piezoelectric
power as well as more will be the hydro power.

·
As
mentioned in the previous line India receives ample rains. But unfortunately we
are able to tap only a small fraction of it for commercial purposes. This
method can prove very useful in regions of high surface runoff as the water
instead of being wasted can be used to generate electricity. With special
reference to the north eastern regions of our country which encounter frequent
power cut-offs this method can prove very useful.

·
The
discharge can serve many purposes. We can feed it into rain water harvesting
structures which will cater to the replenishment of the water table. At the
same time the water can be used for irrigation, domestic and industrial
purposes.

·
At
the end of March 2011, thermal power plants accounted for an overwhelming 64%
of the total installed capacity in the country, with an installed capacity of
131.2 thousand MW. Hydro power plants come next with an installed capacity of
37.6 thousand MW, accounting for 18.2% of the total installed Capacity.

It is evident from the above data
that India relies highly on the deposits of Fossil fuels (they contribute to
more than half of the country’s supply of energy). With the stock of fossil
fuels being limited Hydro power emerges as one of the strong contenders to
cater to the country’s energy needs in the future.

Thus our structure shall help to increase
the Hydro power contribution to the total power output of the country.

Risk Factors:

1.
In
spite of proper reinforcements an overloading of the structure or a natural
hazard (landslide or earthquake) can lead to failure of the structure.
Therefore the structure should not be located near a densely inhabited area.

2.
Irregularities
in the rainfall pattern can affect the power output. Hence the structure should
be preferably built in a location with considerable amount of rainfall keeping
in mind the economic viability.

3.
The
discharge from the structure in case of improper management can lead to
flooding in the surrounding areas. Thus the water discharge from the structure
should be properly managed ( either drained into the rivers or fed into the
rain water harvesting structures )

Factors to be worked on:

Piezoelectricity:

Piezoelectricity is what we
believe the next renewable source of energy India needs. The field has a lot of
potential and research opportunities for it to be implemented on a large scale.

Piezoelectricity when combined
with other fields such as Nanotechnology and Hydroelectricity (as in our case)
can prove to be instrumental in bringing the Renewable resources to the energy
forefront. Hence due impetus should be given to research in such supplementary
technologies.

Our country has a potential of of generating about 60,600 MW power using
non-conventional energy sources, which is more than the required
amount for the next five years, then why does the government is not keen
in developing this source in bridging supply-demand power gap? The
answer lies in the 192 billion tones of recoverable coal reserves which
is encouraging coal based power projects and hampering the healthy
growth of non-conventional energy programs.

I think emerging needs of energy can be fulfilled only by creating the
awareness among the people about the energy conservation and management.
The attention should be focused on promoting renewable energy sources
like solar and wind energy from domestic to commercial level like
following
1) implementation of small capacity solar and wind system
on buildings( residential and commercial) depending upon area of
premises. so that "x" watt per square feet should be harnessed from
every buildings by renewable sources .it should make compulsory by
government organisation.
2) Use of public transport should be increase like trains metros CNG buses to reduce the environmental impacts by this sector.

our energy crisis is somewhere rising from the fact that we fail to
complete the cycle and assume that the system is linear.The energy
shortage is more due to losses then supply deficiency.‘Big’ may or may
not be ugly but small is definitely beautiful. Local community level
measures will provide a great output ratio. Let’s take care of the
seconds and minutes and the hours and days and years will take care of
themselves. Instead of forcibly turning to renewable options lets take
them up voluntarily wherever we can so that we have non renewables still
left to be used where we cant substitute them for their positive
outputs.
